Day trip to Moalboal, Cebu island

Day vacation to Moalboal, Cebu island

Notice:  My SD digital camera card messed up, so I dropped a bunch of photos of the journey.  My GoPro films on the trip capture a fantastic total of it, and you can see the vids embedded at the finish of this article.  Thanks.

One particular of the (a lot of) great matters about dwelling in the Philippines is the ability to vacation about the islands at will.  With it’s in depth network of quick hop flight specials (Cebu Pacific’s specials in distinct), ferries (both passenger and RO-RO), and buses, discovering the islands is quite simple and low cost.  I have been listed here for a little whilst and carry on to be befuddled by the number of expats who have not taken advantage of the prospect to travel all around the country.  The Philippines is just much too beautiful a place not to see!

Google Maps is your friend…….

Last week – having an acute scenario of itchy ft – I decided to head up to Moalboal on the west coast of Cebu.  I had read that there was some really very good snorkeling up there and that the western national street on Cebu was a fairly breathtaking experience, and observing as it was a 154 KM round journey, I decided to make it a day journey, thus saving me the (negligible) fees of being at a hotel.  I looked above the map on Google, set my gear jointly, and strike the rack.  I woke up at 430 AM, woofed down a brief breakfast of boiled eggs, loaded up the YBR and cruised into the dawn (and worrisome storm clouds) to the nearby port city of Sibulan.  Immediately after refreshing myself with a mouth watering cup of Nescafe 3 in 1 coffee, I rode my bicycle on to the 6 AM RO-RO ferry (the trusty if instead decrepit LCT-Martin), which can make hourly operates amongst Sibulan and the city of Santander on Cebu island.  The 9 KM trip throughout the Tanlon Strait was uneventful.  The looming clouds were being gradually dispersing and I saved my eyes peeled for dolphins which from time to time lower throughout the bow for a totally free and incredibly entertaining experience.  Alas, no dolphins, but it was nevertheless a really peaceful and relaxing start to the working day.  And as generally, it was constantly a chic enjoyment to stand on the fantail and observe the volcanic Cuernos de Negros (Horns of Negros – Close by Mt. Talinis amongst them) loom in excess of the receding shores of my property island.

Ferry pilot house – rice cooker out of frame…….

The moment I received the bicycle off the RO-RO, I donned my helmet and hit the highway.  It was only close to 7 AM, and the temperature was still in the superior 70’s – fantastic using weather conditions.  What I had heard about the landscapes together Cebus’s western nationwide highway was genuine.  Even while it was overcast, with an occasional incredibly short shower, the trip alongside the coastline was frikken magnificent.  A very good portion of it is suitable along the ocean, and the scenery was just wonderful.

Smokey early morning at Sibulan – appropriate out of Apocalypse Now (which was filmed in the Phils)…..

I stopped at some little city about 30 KM’s up the coastline and invigorated myself with a breakfast pastry and a different cup of 3 in 1.  In the more provincial portions of the Philippines, pedicabs (bike driven tricylcles) are a great deal additional commonplace than their motorized relations, and the dudes (and gals) propelling them sported some very huge quadriceps.  Then all over again, I noticed rather a couple of them cigarette smoking as they pedaled along.  Amusing that I mention that, looking at as my lame ass still has not quit…..
I skipped the entrance to Kawasan Falls and experienced to backtrack a couple of klicks to discover it.  The inconvenience was properly really worth it, even so, as – even along the access highway – you can inform that Kawasan is a very distinctive area.  I took a different crack alongside the fall’s outflow river (beautiful, shaded turquoise h2o), sat myself down on a rock, shot two clips on my GoPro (my 6 Months in the Philippines and some footage for the Kawasan Falls online video), and just slowed myself down and enjoyed the second.

Just after getting a bunch of video, I continued north to Moalboal.  The city itself is quite non-descript, currently being almost similar to just about every single other Filipino city I have pushed by way of, and – as standard – discovered myself lost.  By now it was scorching as blazes – the sun was beating down, my uncovered skin was setting up to fry, and that unpleasant heat/humidity-induced layer of slime had gathered on my skin.  I identified myself on a dirt street, motored alongside a KM or so and ended at the gate to a dive vacation resort called Turtle Bay.  Warm, tired and a bit miserable, I stumbled into the reception spot and questioned what their enterance cost was.  (Most resorts have “consumable” enterance expenses – typically a few hundred peso that you have to devote in the cafe all in all, a fairly good offer!)

The courteous receptionist eyed my disheveled condition with no very little total of pity and manufactured a connect with to the dive shop, as I experienced spelled out that I just required to do some snorking off their seashore.  The Filipino employees membre from the dive shop arrived soon and told me that I could just use their beach for free!  The receptionist then ushered me into their quite good restaurant where by I woofed down a yummy (and substantial) egg salad sandwich (with fries for 180 pesos) and about a gallon of h2o.  Considering that it was off time, the spot was deserted – there was only one particular guest (a small Spaniard who looked just like Lars Ulrich from Metallica) and he ate his lunch and was off back again to Spain an hour afterwards.  I then had the position to myself.  Woo-hoo.

Fish rental

The snorkeling appropriate off Turtle Bay’s dock place was rather good.   They did not have the assortment of fish that Dauin’s marine sanctuary has, but they experienced a whole lot more of them.  The “wall” was about 200 meters off shore, and it was wonderful staying capable to snorkel together the cliff that plummeted into the cerulean blue darkness.  There are nutritious up currents coming from the depths, and hundreds of reef fish were being swarming about obtaining lunch.  Peering into the darkness below was sort of disconcerting.  Everything could be down there, and amidst flashes of movement under, my imagination ran wild.
Inspite of this, I didn’t’ get eaten by sea monsters and manufactured my way again to the seaside.  Rinsing off the salt h2o, I peaceful for a little bit on a shaded lounge chair.  Last but not least unwound, I mounted my YBR, bade the wonderful employees at Turtle Bay farewell, and headed out the moment again.  A forum member experienced described that I ought to find out a person named Steve at a nearby cafe and say hello, but when I got there he was not to be identified.  Alas.

Sea monster……

Jurassic-period starfish

There ended up a several major rain showers on my way back down the coastline to the port of Santander.  I experienced to pull over a pair of periods to wait around them out, and it was good that I experienced my helmet, as the roadways got pretty slick. I arrived again at the port close to 515 PM and took the 6 PM ferry back again to Dumaguete.  The solar was environment guiding Mt Talinis as we sailed, and I was incredibly information with my working day trip up to see the fishies at Moalboal.

Pipefish creating the magic happen…..

Stay tuned as I will be placing up the movie of my side trip to Kawasan Falls soon!
