Godzilla and My First Philippines Earthquake

Godzilla and My Very first Philippines Earthquake

Yesterday I experienced the possibility to working experience two factors:  A quite bad film (Godzilla) and my incredibly initially earthquake.  The two ended up equally disappointing, and I hope to all the gods that subsequent occasions will be similarly disappointing.  Perfectly, at the very least as the earthquakes go – with any luck , the films – provided time – will get greater.

I had not been to a film theater in the Philippines (following currently being below for 6 months), so I figured it was time to subsume myself in  – what I have listened to – is really the social occasion.  Sara had indicated that she was fascinated in viewing Spiderman 2, but I experienced a hankering for some huge, mutant monsters and was also equally fascinated to see what Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad fame had involved himself in.  My Pagadian Princess and I entered into negotiations, and she ultimately conceded that she hadn’t noticed Spiderman 1 yet, so Godzilla was cool with her.

Groovy.

We hopped on my trusty YBR125 and raced down to Robinsons.   A bit peckish, we stopped for supper at Mang Inasaal, my favored Filipino rapidly food items put. Sara experienced yummy BBQ pork (sooooo succulent) and I had pork sisig (super scorching pig by-solutions chopped into tiny parts and seasoned with garlic, onion, and other delicious things).

Satiated, we made our way to the theater and took some pictures along the way.  It was a 530 PM clearly show on a Thursday night, so there weren’t several individuals there.  Nonetheless, I was capable to see what I experienced listened to about – Filipinos texting on their telephones, updating their Fb status and speaking to the monitor.  I grumbled a bit (chill out, uptight stoopid Kano!) but later on joined them, texting some friends after we got the earthquake.  Just before carrying out that I experienced grumbled to Sara and questioned her to flip her cellular phone off, so she was just a weeeeeeeee bit peeved when I pulled my cell phone out later on and started out texting.  Yup, I am a hypocrite.  And it is Sara’s position to remind me of how much a hypocrite I am.

Anyhoo.  The theater was rather snug what with it’s aircon heading, and we experienced just gotten past the aspect of the motion picture exactly where Bryan Cranston is yapping about seismic activity when, all of a unexpected,  a bunch of individuals get started acquiring up and heading for the exits.  Wow, I thought, these folks are Severely not appreciating Bryan Cranston’s acting skill!  I requested Michelll what was heading on and she reported “Earthquake.”  Then I felt it. (I consider I considered the preceding shakes have been part of the movie’s Dolby subwoofer distinctive results.)  A further shake and I seemed up at the ceiling.  “Oh, gentleman,” I mentioned, “I confident hope I do not die right now.”  The theater shut down the film and the stability dude came in and advised us to depart the theater.  We joined the crush and made it to the lobby.  The shaking had stopped by then and individuals were clamoring for refunds or cost-free tickets.  Eyeing their base line, the administration created the determination to have us go again into the theater.  Balancing mortality in opposition to wanting to see the rest of the film, we chose the latter and received to see Godzilla, the King of Monsters, kick serious ass.

Lobby was rather peaceful, pre-earthquake

Dwelling in the Ring of Fire here in the Philippines can make pure catastrophes a quite authentic proposition.  Earthquakes, typhoons, tsunamis, mud slides, volcanoes……. we acquired it all.  Coming from the seismically secure northeast of the United states, these are a thing that I – or any other foreigner – basically has to get used to.  Hmmmmm…… less difficult stated than accomplished.

The quake was a 6.3 and positioned off the western coast of Negros Oriental.

Shake, rattle and roll, child.
